#113 Stuck in a Thought? - Dialoguing Out of a Ditch

Season #5

Ever notice how one thought can send you straight into a ditch? “Nobody likes me.” “I always mess everything up.” “I’m trapped.” “It’s too late.” And sometimes trying to jump straight from one of those thoughts to a wildly positive one doesn’t work—because you simply don’t believe it yet. In this episode, I introduce a tool I call Dialoguing Out of the Ditch: a way to work with your thoughts instead of fighting them. Think of being down in a ravine. You probably can’t leap from the bottom straight to the top. You need a foothold—something solid enough to hold your weight. Thoughts can work the same way. Instead of demanding that your mind suddenly believe something completely different, we look for the next believable thought. Listen for the language that may be pulling you deeper into the ditch: words like always, never, nobody, everybody, impossible, stuck, trapped, should, have to, must, and can’t. Then begin asking: Is that completely accurate? What’s slightly more open? What can I do from here? You don’t have to manufacture a perfect positive thought. You simply find one thought that feels a little more accurate, a little more possible, or a little more empowering. Then another. Then another. One foothold at a time. Because sometimes changing your life doesn’t begin with changing everything. It begins with changing the way you describe what is happening. You don’t need the perfect thought. You need the next thought that will hold your weight. If this gives you a foothold, share it with someone who may need one too. — Rozanne Marsh Creator of Level Up Empowering Possibilities & Rephraseology Imagination: Live Outside the Box.
